Asia Rugby Returns to Play: Division II Match Marks First Asia Rugby Test after 1,064 Days

Pakistan and Thailand are all set to battle for a chance at promotion to Asia Rugby’s top tier Championship in a two-test Division II clash in Pakistan getting underway on Sunday 29th May, with the second Test to be played on 1st June, 2022.

Results and Fixture: Asia Rugby Men’s Division 2 2022

This leg of the Championship represents a landmark as far Asia Rugby’s post-pandemic ‘Return to Play’ strategy: it marks 1,064 days since Asia Rugby last hosted a test match. “Three years is a long time for a sport to be dormant. It is great for Asia Rugby… to get back on track again. If you want to grow the game, you must see some great international clashes to showcase the best talent available. Giving players the opportunity to grow and test themselves against the best,” comments Pakistan Head Coach Gert Mulder.

Mulder, who is overjoyed at the prospect of his team returning to the field, adds: “We saw back in my home country, South Africa, that we had a huge increase in player numbers on all levels getting back on the rugby fields after Covid. I believe we will see the same phenomenon all over the world. That said, I do not think it was difficult to get players on the pitch again; they want to play and they want to represent their country. The main concern was to get the players strength and conditioning up to standard to prevent injuries and get the players battle ready.”

Things are heating up in Lahore in every sense as anticipation, preparations and excitement peak ahead of the first Test. The Pakistan Rugby Union hosted a press conference the day before the opening fixture, which was well covered by both the electronic and print media.

Both matches are being played at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore, commencing at 7.30 p.m. local time. Entry for the public is free and all officials and players at the Press Conference warmly welcomed Lahoris to come experience the excitement of international rugby in their own back yard.

Moreover, Pakistan Captain Hammad Safdar and PRU President Arif Saeed encouraged the public to come to the stadium to support the national team in these crucial encounters.
“Of course, our target is to get a medal,” she said. “The colour should be gold.”

As the squad prepares for the tournament, which will be held at Tokyo Stadium, the players have taken inspiration from the cherry blossom that is the emblem of the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) and appears on the team’s kit.

The Sakura players have also bought into seven team rules: self-management, consideration, gratitude, respect, pride, decency and harmony.

“As you can see on our shirt, our union logo is a cherry blossom,” Kagawa said.

“Cherry blossom is very beautiful, but it doesn’t last long. Once they bloom they are just gone for a very short time period, so all of those flowers will make an effort to be the best during [the time] they are blooming.

“So, we are just having that image in our team as well, so the cherry blossom actually represents what we do as a team.

“To achieve what we would like to do in our team, we [also] have seven rules in our team.”

She added: “For us to perform well in the game of rugby, it is required of all the players not only to train hard but also put value on their attitude as a national representative player, on and off the field.

“Therefore, both our players and staff always have these rules in their mind, and try to implement them on an every-day basis.

“As a representative of Japan, we would like to be top of the world on and off the field. To achieve that we are determined to make our best effort for Tokyo 2020 with these seven rules.”

Kagawa appeared on Asia Rugby Live alongside China women’s sevens head coach, Euan Mackintosh, Chinese national team player, Chen Keyi and Chinese Rugby Football Association communications manager Wang Xizi.

China booked their first appearance at the Olympics with victory over Hong Kong in November, 2019, and have been together as a squad since returning to the country in March.

Mackintosh, who joked he would see Kagawa in the Olympic final at Tokyo Stadium, has been pleased with how his players have adapted during a difficult year.

“The potential here is huge,” he said. “I didn’t know a lot about the rugby set-up before I came, but seeing the structures that have been put in place and the number of players who are actually playing the game, it’s definitely an exciting time looking at the potential that China has.

“With obviously us qualifying for the Olympics for the first time, it opens up a lot of doors for us with regards to the promotion of rugby sevens here… just to inspire some younger female athletes to play a game that probably a lot of them don’t know exists.
With World Rugby Sevens Series experience, and having finished second in this year’s Asia Rugby Sevens Series, hosts China are among the favorites to qualify.

Team Manager Jia Jipo has spoken to Asia Rugby about what qualification to the Olympics would mean to her side.

“We attach great importance to the tournament and we have prepared a lot.

“This was a long-term process and it was indispensable.”

Sean Horan will coach the women’s side this weekend and his experience could prove decisive if China are to progress.

With the Rugby World Cup in Asia and next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, Asia is a hotbed for development in the sport currently and China will be central to the continued growth.
