In a historic move for Asia Rugby, two active member unions – Chinese Taipei Rugby Union (CTRU) and Singapore Rugby Union (SRU), announced to reopen their rugby borders in line with the progressive lifting of international Covid-19 restrictions.

The affirmation came after two years of inaction and was witnessed at Phuket Sevens in Thailand at the Committee meeting.

""The announcement was sealed with immediate effect by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the President of Chinese Taipei – Herman Huang and the President of Singapore Rugby- Terence Khoo. As per the MoU, the two-member nations have agreed to support each other in several ways, including conducting training and educational workshops, and undertaking coaching and officiating responsibilities.

Other than this, the two unions along with the support of Asia Rugby have also mutually decided to organize regular Test and friendly league matches for different age groups and help in streamlining the day-to-day operational and administrative duties.

Early discussions regarding restarting the bilateral ties between the two unions had begun in February this year and were initiated by the President of Asia Rugby – Qais Al-Dhalai – himself, in a bid to uplift the sport in developing unions.

Terence Khoo added “I am delighted that with the easing of covid restrictions and borders opening up, we are now able to rekindle the special relationship between both unions which has been forged since 2013 during our Asia Tri-Nations Tournament.

Both nations have played each other in Asia Rugby competitions, but we wanted to ensure that this special relationship can continue to grow deeply and that our fixture would be something we could look forward to annually.

Taipei hosts Post-COVID19 First Rugby Tournament

The Ministry of Education has approved, with the collaboration of Taipei City Department of Sport, Chinese Taipei Rugby Football Union’s (CTRFU) application to host the 74th National Rugby Tournament.

After health authorities have announced the easing of lockdown in June, CTRFU assessed the risks and were satisfied that player and stakeholder welfare criteria have been achieved. Hence, CTRFU issued a call for registration for teams nationwide for the National Rugby Tournament this July!

Secretary-General, Jeremy Pai, has been pleased with the enthusiastic response in his efforts to organize the “return to rugby”. The tournament will last 5 days from July 7-11, a super week of rugby, at Bailing Rugby Field in Taipei. Various formats and different age groups will have the opportunity to compete for national honours.

The categories competing comprise the following:

The organization of the tournament with an emphasis on inclusion and variety is part of CTRFU’s ongoing efforts on Get Into Rugby (GIR) for the Rugby Retention Program.

Allowing the experience of the tournament to be multi-dimensional and inspiring for promising talents to imagine even more possibilities. The guidelines and advice by Asia Rugby and World Rugby for gender inclusion and age level safeguards have enabled CTRFU to modernize, re-structure and re-organize efforts into growing the game.

Understanding the rugby community’s hunger for rugby in this current environment, CTRFU President Herman Huang has also committed to Livestream the matches via Facebook and share the video feed with Asia Rugby for the benefit of the wider rugby community. CTRFU is mindful of Asia Rugby President Qais Abdullah Al Dhalai’s motto, “We can do better, but TOGETHER!”

It will be especially gratifying for graduates-to-be to enjoy their last game with their teammates and receive a proper ending to their season before they move on to the next stage.

As one of the few fortunate unions that have enjoyed a successful national response to COVID19, CTRFU have taken the opportunity of the delayed re-organized rugby calendar to showcase non-contact elementary level rugby as well as the women’s game.

The rugby super week hopes to concentrate and maximize resources to gather support and exposure for the game at all levels for all genders.

The youth players came from Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Macau to participate in the second Asian Rugby Exchange Festival – an XRugby tournament and a key part of World Rugby’s Impact Beyond legacy programme, which has resulted in more than 1.8 million people playing rugby in Asia ahead of Rugby World Cup 2019.

IMPACT BEYOND INSPIRED 1.8 MILLION RUGBY PARTICIPANTS IN ASIA

As Fukuoka crossed the line, there were similar joyous scenes across Japan, but in this local rugby club in Fukuoka there was a heightened sense of pride and exaltation. This was because Fukuoka, who came off the bench to inspire the Brave Blossoms to their stunning victory over last year’s World Rugby Team of the Year, is an ex-Genkai Juniors player.

“The young players here look up to Kenki and try to copy his stepping style,” said Genkai coach Masahiro Oba. “He is a player who has been where they are now.”

Chants of “Nippon!” erupted throughout the match, reaching a crescendo of screaming and cheering when Fukuoka scored his try.

THE STORY OF KENKI FUKUOKA

But before the Japan game, the players had been opponents on the rugby field. Representing 16 under-14 teams from across Japan and Asia, they had just finished the first day of the two-day tournament at Sanix Global Arena Stadium, home to the Genkai club, which fielded two teams.

XRugby aims to encourage participation, with an emphasis on enjoyment and simplicity, by allowing people to play the game without the need for posts, large squads and a full-sized field. It is played on a 50x70m pitch, with seven players on each side.

Scrums, lineouts and mauls feature just three players from each team, while tackles and all kicks must be under shoulder height.

The format is a key aspect of the Impact Beyond programme, which aims to promote and develop the game throughout Asia. Exchange initiatives such as this weekend’s tournament in Fukuoka, jointly organised by Asia Rugby and the Japan Rugby Football Union with support from World Rugby, are a crucial part of that work.

Ian Davidson, above left, was one of the players who travelled to Japan with his club, the Jakarta Komodos Rugby Football Club. Living in Indonesia, which does not have a large rugby-playing population, meant Ian did not always have access to the sport. But after two years of playing, he says it is his “favourite sport”.

“When I got into rugby I didn’t really know what it was, but after the first day I just fell in love with it,” he said.

“I’m really excited to be here. I love playing in tournaments because all year I’ve been playing against the same people and, finally, I get to play against some new teams and get to meet people from all over Asia.”

The young players also attended the Italy versus Canada RWC 2019 match in Fukuoka last Thursday as part of their four-day trip.

Davidson was blown away by the fan culture at the stadium for his first top-level match. “It was really exciting because I’d never actually been to a professional sports game, I’d only ever seen them on television,” he said.

“The energy is much different and I felt like everyone there was my friend and we were all cheering for the same thing.”

Davidson and his team-mates were accompanied on the trip by Jakarta Komodos coach Iswahyudi and chairman Agus Djamhoer, who is also vice-chairman of Indonesian Rugby. Djamhoer has been instrumental in the rise of the Komodos, growing the club from 20 to 120 junior players.

Rather than being focused on results, Ian was more inspired by the relationships he had formed playing XRugby.

“It’s a really fun, super-cool experience because it’s like your own little under-14 World Cup,” he said. “We have talked about the game together and practised together and just had some good times.”

RNS fm/sg/rl/mr/bo
The post Impact Beyond ‘Mini World Cup’ unites children from across Asia at Japan hero’s club appeared first on Asia Rugby.
[
}

https://www.asiarugby.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Mini-Wold-cuop.jpg
Brunei", "macau", "impact beyond", "Nepal", "Indonesia", "Thailand", "malaysia", "Chinese Taipei", "Bangladesh", "Rugby World Cup 2019" ]

The Philippines started brightly and after some good work in the backs, both of their wingers Justin Coveney and Ellis Rudder gave them an early 12-0 lead. But Jonathan Wong, who showed incredible pace to score a length of the field try after a quick tap and go inside their own 22, reduced the deficit before a third Philippines try from full-back Patrice Olivier took the score to 19-7.

The Philippines’ penalty count grew and with Ishraf Marah in fine form, his four converted penalties helped Singapore reduce the deficit once more to 19-16 midway through the second half.

However, the Philippines backs once again capitalised on the space created by their forwards with Ned Stephenson calming his side’s nerves before Erik Erikson added their fifth try. There was still time for Wong to add his second but it was too little for Singapore who fell just short in the match.

Sri Lanka bounced back from their semi-final defeat to the eventual champions with an impressive 72-17 win over hosts Chinese Taipei. Despite claiming third place, the Tuskers drop a couple of spots in the rankings to 45th with a reduced rating of 46.70 points.

The only other match to affect the rankings was Finland’s 34-22 win against Norway in the concluding match of the Rugby Europe Conference 2 North campaign.

Finland were virtually assured of the runners-up spot behind champions Latvia in the Conference 2 North table when they raced into a 22-0 half-time lead. Norway fought back gamely after the break but a quickfire brace from openside Matti Keranen put the result beyond any doubt.

Thailand v Chinese Taipei, Chinese Taipei beat Thailand 28-21 in an enthralling Asia Rugby Championship Division II encounter to take this year’s title.
With both sides having beaten India earlier this week, the winner of this match was always going to be crowned champions and the match did not disappoint.

Ranked several places than Thailand in the World Rugby rankings Chinese Taipei were the favourites heading into the match but the hosts made them work hard on a humid day in Pattaya.
Akarin Thitisakulvit gave the hosts the lead from a penalty but the first try came in the 19th minute when Che-Yu Sung crossed the whitewash.
Thailand hit back 10 minutes later to give themselves a 10-8 lead as Vatcharakorn Vorachate powered over.
Thitisakulvit added a second penalty to extend their lead further but on the stroke of half-time Chinese Taipei brought the match to within one point as Wei-Ming Ling scored their second try and take a 14-13 lead into the half-time oranges.
The hosts did not let up at all in the entire match however and once again took the lead as Sumet Thammaporn added their second try with 20 minutes left.

Wei-Ming Lin gave Taipei the lead once more, before a third Thitisakulvit penalty drew the scores level at 21-21 with 10 minutes to go.
It was heartbreak however for the hosts as once more Lin scored his second try of the half and a successful conversion from Chun-Hao Yeh secured the title win for Chinese Taipei.
The post Chinese Taipei take Division II title , Thailand v Chinese Taipei appeared first on Asia Rugby.
[
}

https://www.asiarugby.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/WhatsApp-Image-2018-05-26-at-12.53.36.jpeg
Thailand v Chinese Taipei", "Thailand", "Chinese Taipei", "Asia Rugby Championship", "News", "ARC" ]

While Chinese Taipei won 44-5, Thailand were made to work a little harder in their 18-12 victory against India.

With seven places separating the two sides in the World Rugby rankings Thailand may well be the underdogs for the match but that does not matter according to their captain.

“We have been able to get new players from every area of Thailand and Get Into Rugby has been a great helps in increasing the number of player in our country.

“Rugby has a lot of meaning for me and everyone who plays it. I feel Rugby helps me be a better man for every step of life.

“It teaches us how to work together with team mates, and teaching for living with every person. It teaches us to sacrifice for things that we love and teaches us how to show better sportsmanship on and off the ground. We can learn a lot about life itself from rugby.”
