The UAE Rugby Federation and the Emirates School Establishment are reaffirming an exciting cooperation agreement, the Federation announced during a recent meeting at its headquarters in Dubai.

Her Excellency Dr Rabaa Al-Sumaiti, Director General of the Emirates School Establishment, and Saoud Belshalat, UAE Rugby Federation Board Member and Chairperson of the National Teams Committee, and several officials from both sides participated in the meeting.

The cooperation aims to spread awareness of the importance of sports in shaping students’ personalities, inculcating sportsmanship, developing their physical and mental skills, and hence also their well-being.

Her Excellency Dr Rabaa Al-Sumaiti stressed the immense importance the Establishment attaches to sports in all its forms because of its significant impact on improving students’ achievement and performance in various fields. Hence, Emirates School Establishment endeavours to motivate students to adopt sports as a sustainable lifestyle in the various stages of their development as part of its educational mission.

She noted that rugby had been included in the school curriculum due to the importance of this type of sport in developing students’ talents, and praised the outstanding effort made by the UAE Rugby Federation in spreading rugby among various groups of society.

Mr Saud Belshalat shared that, since its inception in 2009, the UAE Rugby Federation had been working tirelessly to spread the sport of rugby in the country, laying the foundations to field full Emirati National Teams; maintaining concerted efforts aimed at enhancing the number of participants of the sport, focusing particularly on school students via direct cooperation with schools across the different emirates, which is proving successful.

The number of rugby players across schools and communities reached more than 20,000 male and more than 15,000 female participants, including many who joined the national teams as part of the UAE Rugby Federation’s youth pathway, added Mr Belshalat.

Fawzia Faridoon, UAE Rugby Federation Board Member and Chairperson of its Gender Equity Committee praised this cooperation, noting that the UAE Rugby Federation is fully prepared to continue cooperating with the Emirates School Establishment to serve the common goals of both parties in spreading the game further.

To strengthen and activate this partnership, Ms Faridoon elaborated, the UAE Rugby Federation In cooperation with HSBC Bank — the strategic partner of the Federation — is providing special training balls for schools that meet the program requirements:1,600 balls and 700 items of sports clothing to support the grassroots program had been delivered across the Emirates.

UAE Rugby Development Director Sami Smara underscored the importance of the meeting and the return of the player’s pathway program, which provides opportunities for tens of thousands of students to learn about and play rugby for the first time for many, following activity disruptions at the end of 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the return of sports and other live events across the country, he added, we look forward to seeing more youngsters playing rugby with the values that we are proudly gifting to the communities.

Benjamin van Rooyen, Asia Rugby Development Consultant, congratulated UAERF on their partnership programme with the Emirates School Establishment which led to integrating the Olympic sport of rugby into the curriculum. “UAERF is truly an example of a successful player pathway programme.

The collaboration between the union, education authorities and a commercial partner is the ideal model for a sustainable player engagement. The “ HSBC Emirati Player Pathway Programme” has become one of the most successful programmes in Asia in terms of the number of participants who have been active in schools, and who are also actively engaged in rugby on regular basis over the past years. This is a successful and long-term experience worthy of being emulated, Mr Van Rooyen concluded

Tied at 17-17, seconds before the final hooter, UAE made the most of the golden-try scoring opportunity despite failing an early penalty try conversion attempt.

In the women’s invitational series, Thailand A asserted complete dominance and defeated UAE in the final match with a score-line of 22-5. A solitary try in the end by UAE could hardly make it count.

Third place was bagged by Thailand A and Thailand B in men’s and women’s categories, respectively, in the seven series organized by Asia Rugby in association with Thailand Rugby in Phuket on April 9 and 10, 2022.

After beating the hosts in the semi-final 19-5, UAE set up to meet Singapore in the final who stunned Chinese Taipei 19-12 in the first men’s semi-final match.

In the gold medal match, Singapore did not only score the opening try but went one up and held on to a 12-0 lead in the beginning of the game. UAE’s speedster Mohammad Hatam stepped up and scored a brace as the team broke the Singaporean defence with their quick feet and wing attacks.

First semi-final of the women’s invitational series was played between the two host teams. Thailand A maintained a clean-slate and booked the final spot without much resistance. UAE snatched a victory away from Singapore in the second semi-final with two back-to-back tries from Robyn Etherington.

Jayne Chan’s injury impacted the team as they failed to hold on to their lead and eventually succumbed to pressure from UAE. In women’s final, Thailand A went into attack from the word ‘go’ and took over their opponents in no time.

Hosts Thailand won big in both categories as the men secured third and fifth places while the women’s teams won top honours with a gold and bronze-medal finish.

Thailand A got the better of Chinese Taipei with a scoreline of 21-5 in the men’s third-place match whereas Thailand B beat a spirited Singapore team 17-7 in the women’s bronze medal match.

Even as Chinese Taipei started the campaign on a promising note on Day 1, Thailand teams picked up pace to end the tournament on a high. Absence of Singapore’s two key game makers Hidayat Jeffrydin and Jayne Chan during crucial moments certainly hurt the union as they slipped from having the higher ground to falling in rank. Debutants Bangladesh impressed with their vigour and closed the campaign with a near-perfect last-minute try against Thailand B.

Despite a slow start in the tournament, the Palestines men put on a commendable show as they made their first debut on Asia stage and showcased a decent level of rugby.

Even as Iraq women fell short of securing a win in the women’s category, Zina Saleem powered the team to their first-ever international try in their debut match against the hosts Qatar.

Asia Rugby President Mr Qais Al Dhalai joined the players and officials over two days of action-packed rugby weekend and extended his best wishes to the winners and participants alike. “Many congratulations to the winning teams and to all participants for bringing out the best of their sportsman spirit.

We are happy to organize another international tournament on Asian soil after a successful U-18 Girls championship last month in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

It is also a proud moment for us at Asia Rugby to be able to offer Palestine and Iraq a platform to ink history with their first international debut.”

The President also took time out to laud the efforts of various federations in ensuring an environment of safe play. “As Asia Rugby is devoted to the safety of players, officials and fans under all circumstances, we are continuously monitoring the health situation in the region while adhering to COVID-19 protocols”.

With continued cooperation from all our Asia Rugby member unions to our ‘Return to Play’ initiative, we are certain that Asia Rugby will conduct many more tournaments to further strengthen the principles of equality, transparency and accountability in all quarters of the game.”
