Japan women record opening series win in Incheon

Japan beat China 19-5 to lift round one of the Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Incheon.

With a home Olympics to look forward to next year, Japan will be using the Asian series as preparation and they got off to the perfect start.

In the final Yume Hirano opened the scoring and despite Feifei Yang levelling the scores, an impressive second half performance from Riho Kurogi ensured they won all of their six matches in Korea.

First she scored her fifty try with China reduced to six players before turning provider for the inspirational Yume Okuroda to score her second of the weekend.

Elsewhere, Florence Symonds, who impressed in last week’s U20 Sevens tournament, continued her fine form in Incheon. In the third place play-off Symonds scored a hat-trick to help Hong Kong beat Kazakhstan 17-10.

Thanapon Huankid scored two tries as Thailand beat Sri Lanka 32-5 to lift the Plate after Norfarahana Aziz scored the only try in Malaysia’s first win of the weekedn, a 7-0 victory against Singapore.

China and Japan had earlier finished top of their pools with three victories from three with attention now turning to China for the second round in two weeks.
