However they will face stiff competition with Australia seeded second and double Olympic champions Fiji seeded third. New Zealand are the reigning men’s champions and are seeded fifth coming in to the event.

Madagascar and Poland women are making their Rugby World Cup Sevens debuts.

The seedings for both men’s and women’s competitions were based on points accrued during the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in 2020 and 2022, while teams who do not participate on the Series were seeded using their rankings gained at World Rugby Sevens events and regional ranking positions ending in July 2022.

The eighth men’s and fourth women’s edition of Rugby World Cup Sevens represents the first Rugby World Cup of any kind since the famous 1995 Rugby World Cup when South Africa were victorious on home soil as President Nelson Mandela handed the Webb Ellis Cup to Francois Pienaar to inspire the Rainbow Nation.

Siviwe Soyizwapi, captain of South Africa men said: “For us as a team we’re just chasing perfection. This is a standalone tournament, a massive tournament in front of our home crowd and we’re really excited for that.

“The fact that it is a knockout tournament doesn’t change the mindset for us. We are focused on getting the perfect game and we focus on ourselves as a team and the standards that we uphold. We are chasing that perfect game from game one.

“To be double would champions [alongside South Africa Men XV] would be massive. It would be great for the nation.

“There is no more expectation here than what we put on ourselves as a team. After the success of the World Series we really don’t want to let ourselves down with a poor performance here. We take all the confidence from doing well throughout the World Series and now it’s up to us to make sure that we go out there and get a good result.”

Sam Dickson, reigning champions New Zealand captain said: “It is great to be back in Cape Town and we have a lot of good memories from here over the years.

“We’ve won Rugby World Cup Sevens a few times over the last few years so we’ll be expecting to do exactly the same but we take it game by game. With the format of straight knock out it can be pretty ruthless so we’ve got to be on our game from the first kick off.

Hong Kong finish as Bowl runners-up at Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018

Hong Kong lost to Chile 20-7 in its first-ever Bowl final appearance at a Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament.

Hong Kong finished in 18th place overall of the 24 men’s teams competing at the world championships this weekend in San Francisco.

Another slow start saw Hong Kong under the cosh early on in the final, as Chile scored three unanswered tries to take a 15-0 lead at halftime.

Scrumhalf Cado Lee Ka-to put his side on the board with a try in the ninth minute. Captain Ben Rimene’s conversion was successful, but Chile managed a fourth try three minutes later to close out the match comfortably and claim the Bowl.

Defensively Hong Kong held the line well against Chile, missing only four tackles – albeit each of those proved crucial.

Aided by some confusing decision-making by the referee at the contact area during critical periods of play, the Chileans beat Hong Kong for a second time on the trot this season, after having ushered the hosts out of the World Series qualifier in April at the Hong Kong Stadium.

“It was a tough ask probably for this side, considering the short time the team has been together. Chile are a good team, so I’m not really disappointed with the loss,” said coach Paul John after the match.

“We defended ok, but when we had the ball, we didn’t really take it to our opposition like we had in the morning [against Uruguay]. We weren’t as decisive as we had been in our last two games.

“But we managed to get a lot of players some good experience in a quality tournament this weekend. We won two and lost two, and weren’t far away from winning a third so it’s been pretty successful really,” said John.

John was pleased with the performance of the three players in the side making their senior sevens debuts, each of whom got significant playing time over the weekend: Alessandro Nardoni, Liam Herbert and Max Denmark.

“They all played well,” said John. “They have also gotten their first experience of top quality sevens now, so from that point of view alone it has been a great tournament for us.

The successful return of Hugo Stiles and Lee Jones from injury will build further competition in the squad, who return to Hong Kong on Tuesday to start preparations for the Asian Games in late August and the Asian Sevens Series starting in September.

Asian Games and the Asia Rugby Sevens Series

“There are a lot of boys at home who weren’t selected and the boys here are performing well, so we should have a very competitive selection now for the Asian Games and the Asia Rugby Sevens Series, which is important,” said John.

Hong Kong will now face familiar opponents Uruguay in the second Bowl semi final tomorrow at 10.06 local time (1.06am, 23 July, Hong Kong time). Chile will face Uganda in the other semi-final after Chile edged Tonga 33-29 and Uganda beat Zimbabwe 24-10 in the quarters.

Coach Paul John was pleased with the overnight improvement but was still looking for a complete performance from his charges.

“We started yesterday’s game with three errors; the boys were nervous and we went 21 points down against a core team quickly. You are always going to be in trouble in that position and that’s what happened,” said John.

“Today, we bounced back a bit. We had a much better first half, but we were nervous again mind, and we were fairly inaccurate.

“In the second half, the boys loosened up a bit, they relaxed and started to play a bit of rugby. When we did that, the lads looked okay out there.”

Hong Kong will front up against Uruguay, who edged Papua New Guinea 21-19 in the quarterfinal, but John is not focussed on the opposition.

“With only one game today, we have a little bit more time to study Uruguay and to have a look at them, but I think it’s more about getting our game right to be honest with you.

“We are letting sides get a bit of momentum against us at the start of games. If we start games a bit better we will be a more difficult side to play.

“I’m just really pleased with the way the boys bounced back and got that win, because that was important for us to be in that 16-20 spot overall, especially after losing yesterday. So that was vital for us to get that win.

“Now we have to go as best we can in that group of four now. It is like a Hong Kong Sevens qualifier tournament for us again isn’t it? [ED note: All four semi finalists played in the Hong Kong qualifier in 2018].

“It gives us a chance to practice against teams that we will probably come to meet in those kind of tournaments, so it is important that we grow and enjoy the tournament this weekend, but also that we get a lot out of it and that starts with showing that same level of improvement day to day,” John added.

The post Hong Kong jam Jamaica 24-10 to advance to Bowl Semi Final at Rugby World Cup Sevens #RWC7s appeared first on Asia Rugby.
[
}

https://www.asiarugby.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Toby-Fenn-licks-his-chops-as-he-moves-outside-the-Jamaica-defence.jpg
Hong Kong", "RWC7s", "Bowl FInal", "Unions", "Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018" ]
