Pakistan Rugby Union hosted its first ever World Rugby Medical Level 1 First Aid in Rugby (FAIR) course in Lahore on April 22nd & 23rd 2017. Two (2) one day FAIR courses were conducted by Dr. Namith Sankalpana (World Rugby Medical Educator), a sports medicine specialist from Sri Lanka.
Fourteen course participants from a wide cross-section of individuals involved in sport including Pakistan Rugby Coaches, PE Teachers and Physiotherapists attended the courses. Feedback from participants was that “both the theory & practical sessions were very useful” and they “enjoyed the way the course was run in terms of practical opportunities to demonstrate competencies”
Pakistan joins another a new FAIR course host, Qatar for 2017. In the past year, World Rugby FAIR courses have reached all corners of the Asia Rugby region: India, Dubai, Guam, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and other many unions.
This course, like many others in the region, was organised in response the significant increase in interest by Unions who are now taking player welfare increasingly seriously within Asia.
The move by Asia Rugby to improve player welfare standards to ensure that suitably qualified persons provide ing immediate pitch side care for teams participating in regional tournaments has been effective in developing interest in FAIR courses. This also encourages the development of local medical support within the game at all levels.
“Education on Player Welfare is key to successfully growing the game and courses like FAIR form an essential part of that process” commented Gene Tong, Regional Training Consultant.
