Asia Rugby, with the support of World Rugby, Olympic Solidarity, the Olympic Council of Malaysia and Malaysian Rugby, is set to conduct a four-day training and education programme in Malaysia designed specifically for female coaches and male coaches coaching in women’s rugby.
The training programme, to be delivered by World Rugby Educators Dr. Thomas Bartholomew Browne and Ismail Kadir, will target over 46 participants from both the host country as well as coaches from across the Asian region.
The four-day training event will include a one-day Level 1 Coaching Course for Rugby Sevens, targeting 30 local women’s coaches from Malaysia; a two-day Level 2 Coaching Course for Rugby Sevens, targeting 16 women’s coaches from across Asia; and, a one-day Women’s Sevens Workshop for both local Malaysian and regional coaches.
Malaysia has been selected as the venue not only due to its central location in the region but also because it will be hosting the South East Asia Games in August 2017 — where both Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens will be contested.
Ultimately the empowering women’s rugby training workshops, combining theoretical as well as practical sessions, aim to help respective national unions grow the game across the female population in their countries, as well as to increase the capacity of South East Asian Nations’ National Women’s Team coaches in preparation for the 2017 South East Asian Games.
Women’s interest in rugby, passion for the sport and consequently participation numbers across Asia are growing exponentially, like never before.
World Rugby and Asia Rugby have been working closely with national unions to capitalise on this momentum.
Across Asia the dynamic ‘Get Into Rugby’ program is being implemented to tremendous effect, fuelling this growth and also paving sound development pathways from the grassroots up to national and international levels.
‘Impact Beyond RWC 2019’ legacy programmes are also being implemented in the run-up to, during and following key events to ensure that structures are in place to sustainably develop and grow rugby on the continent.
