Rugby returns to Lahore as Pakistan development improves

27 April, 2019 in Asia Rugby Championship, Pakistan by Asia Rugby

Pakistan will face Uzbekistan in a two-Test series to determine the winner of this year’s Asia Rugby Championship Division III C .

The Pakistan Rugby Academy in Lahore will host the two matches and Pakistan captain Kashif Khawaja is excited for the upcoming test with an ambitious target.

“It will be a good tournament for us as we have been training hard for it,” said Khawaja.

“Uzbekistan is ranked three spots above us and we know they are a strong side but still our expectations are to win both our matches and nothing less.”

The match in Lahore will be the first international taking place in Pakistan for five years, something Khawaja is pleased about.

“We are very grateful to Uzbekistan who have opted to come and play the upcoming fixtures here in Pakistan especially when the nation is going through a tough time.

“This tournament will give youngsters a taste of international rugby and I hope they will be inspired and become as passionate about the sport as we are.”

Rugby is continuing to grow in Pakistan amongst both boys and girls and this tournament will provide another opportunity for rugby to be seen domestically.

“Rugby is starting to become popular in Pakistan. I think we have a good momentum going with a lot of players coming up and taking on the sport.

‘The sport is growing at a tremendous rate. We have a strong Get into Rugby program and our participation numbers are a reflection of that.

“In 2018 Pakistan was fifth globally in new participants in GIR. We have now have a bigger pool of young players who are competing to make the sevens and fifteens squads.

“Our domestic league continues to get more competitive and we have a clearer pathway for players through new age grade tournaments and this is all helping grow the game in numbers and in quality.”
