Rizly Illyas elected Sri Lanka Rugby President

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) was held on 29th August 2020 in Colombo. Former Deputy President Mr Rizly Illyas was elected as the new Sri Lanka Rugby President.

Mr Nazeen Mohamed will take over as Deputy and Mr Jude Dimithri will take over as General Secretary.

Mr Illyas has vast experience in administration and has also served as the Honorary Secretary of Sri Lanka Rugby. He was the second-in-command in the previous set up, and played his rugby at St. Peter’s College Colombo, Petersons Rugby Club and the Colombo Gymkhana Club.

Newly elected Sri Lanka Rugby President Mr Illyas Speaking to Asia Rugby said, “I want to make a change in the system and work very closely with all the stakeholders. We will implement new strategies in our sevens and fifteens rugby.”

Sevens being an Olympic sport, Mr Illyas further stated, “Sri Lanka Rugby will work with some of the top coaches in the world.”

He also pointed out that Sri Lanka Rugby needs to establish a sustainable high-performance unit, and most Mr George Simpkinimportantly will look into contracting a squad of seven’s players under Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union, setting up high-performance facilities and making the players professionals.

Another special moment during the AGM was that Sri Lanka Rugby honoured the service of Late Mr George Simpkin for his loyal and dedicated service rendered to rugby.

Mr Simpkin had been an inspirational coach and mentor to many young players in Asia and in Sri Lanka.

Asia Rugby President Qais Al-Dhalai was delighted to hear the news and commented: “Congratulations to my dear friend Mr Rizly Illyas on being elected as President of Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. I have no doubt that under his leadership Sri Lanka Rugby will go back to the golden days and reach even greater heights‎.”
